Statements of Support
Toni Belknap-Brinegar
My name is Toni Belknap-Brinegar and I have been serving on the Vallivue School Board for a little less than a decade. In this time period, I’ve gone from a Board member to the Chairman of the Board. Also in that time period, I’ve participated directly and indirectly with the Vallivue Education Association (VEA). We are extremely proud of Vallivue’s dedication to centering students’ educational needs when making any decision. Supporting educators and school staff members is a way to meet this aim. I am proud to say that the Board and the VEA have a good working relationship and that is largely because of Alicia Purdy’s selfless leadership. Prior to negotiations, Alicia ensures that all of the building representatives have accurate information by meeting with the Superintendent and the Finance Manager and getting clear and transparent information about the school’s budget so all union members understand what is possible during negotiations. When there is disagreement, Alicia ensures that accurate and fair information gets to the members and negotiators keep in mind both the teacher’s needs and the needs of paraprofessionals and other classified staff who are critical in the education of all students. Overall, without Alicia’s leadership, I do not believe that we would be able to have amicable and fair negotiations at Vallivue.
Over the past three years, the VEA identified that students were coming to school without the necessary supplies and clothing they needed to feel confident. Under Alicia’s leadership a robust back-to-school fair was organized that included free physicals, free haircuts, food boxes, free immunizations, free school supplies, access to good used uniforms (for middle school students), and access to free/reduced lunch applications. In 2024, more than 1400 community members attended the fair – a testament to the need in the community. I was fortunate to attend the fair in 2023 and I witnessed well organized and excited Union members all donating their time, expertise and enthusiasm to their community. This scenario only comes about because of a strong leader.
Idaho is a very conservative state that underfunds education. Whenever there are threats to public education funding, I can look to Alicia to have the most up to date and accurate information about harmful legislation as well as who in Idaho is countering the message. Not only is she active at the state level, she is also very active at the local level. In Idaho, we can only build new schools by passing bonds which must meet a super majority before they are approved. Vallivue is the fastest growing district in the state and in 2022, we were desperate to build two new elementary schools. After two failed attempts at passing the bond, the community and the VEA under Alicia’s leadership banded together with the district and only then did it pass. Without Alicia’s leadership in this effort, the bond would not have passed and students would not have the new facilities that they need.
As stated earlier, Alicia is a selfless leader – which is the best kind. She elevates the leadership and expertise of her fellow professionals and the best example of this is Crystal Villanueva. The Sam Cikaitoga Service Award is presented annually to a minority Union leader who has made a contribution to public education at the local, state, or national association. This award celebrates the ways we are all alike and downplay our differences. This award was presented to Crystal Villanueva at the 2024 IEA Delegate Assembly for her work with the VEA Back-to-School Fair and with the Vallivue Migrant Summer School. I had the privilege of volunteering alongside Ms. Villanueva and I was taken aback by her enthusiasm for teaching.
She was very honest about loving her profession and I witnessed how she jumped in and assisted Spanish-speaking community members get answers to questions at the back-to-school fair. Alicia recognized this drive in her and not only nominated her but advocated for her to receive this award. This is the type of person Alicia is: she recognizes that good leaders uplift others so that everyone’s gifts, skills and talents can be recognized.
Finally, Alicia is all about representation. As a parent of a child with significant disabilities, it gives me great comfort that Alicia is a trained Special Educator and she is always looking for ways to ensure that all (as in EVERY) student is receiving the best education possible within Vallivue. The number one value for NEA is “equal opportunity” which Alicia has upheld to the fullest throughout her career in education.
For this and so many reasons, I wholeheartedly endorse Alicia Purdy for National Education Association Director.
Antonia “Toni” Belknap-Brinegar
Crystal Villanueva
Alicia is a champion for both students and all educators. She is a dedicated, compassionate and determined advocate for equality for students in her community and across the state. Alicia models advocacy by being active in working with legislators locally and in the capitol and growing educators to do the same. Alicia has championed myself and many others to use our voices to be a positive change in the field of education within our community, state and country. Her commitment to education is evident as a local president, statewide committee member on multiple committees, and mentor for many new educators. I know Alicia will continue to bring her positive energy and unwavering commitment to education in the role of NEA director!

Re: Endorsement of Alicia Purdy for NEA Director - Idaho
To whom it may concern:
If you are reading this, then you are concerned about education in the state of Idaho just like me. But there is a person I have known for several years now who probably cares more than you and I put together and her name is Alicia Purdy.
I like to argue with Alicia about politics because she fights like a tiger, but she also fights fair. She listens to my ideas, tries to counter them, but then always tries to find common ground before we go back to our corner
I know that Alicia will fight for education in Idaho any time, anywhere. She is not afraid to enter the lion’s den. But the reason why I think she’d be great as Idaho’s NEA Director is because she speaks lion. These are strange times in our state and our country and as much as it pains me to say it, I think
Education in Idaho will only be improved by people who speak lion.
I am a Special Education teacher at Nampa High School and the president of my local union and I cannot think of anyone I would rather have going into the domed lion dens in Boise and D.C. than Alicia Purdy because I know my
students stand a better chance at getting the resources they need to succeed with Alicia’s roaring than with the anodyne bleating of the lambs we are
accustomed to.
I hardly vote for anything anymore because I fear my votes will just add to the veneer of democracy we have in our state, but I will be voting for Alicia Purdy for NEA Director this year. I hope you do your students a favor and do the same.
Sincerely,
Brian J. Coffey,
Nampa Education Association - President

I am pleased to endorse Alicia Purdy for NEA Director. As an activist teacher, I have personally worked with Alicia on a number of political issues over the years. She has an incredible knowledge base about local, state and national politics. As a school board trustee (9 years) in an Idaho district, I have collaborated with Alicia on a number of projects and issues in and around public education. For years, she has worked to elect pro public education lawmakers while serving kids and her fellow teachers. Alicia is a driven soul who works incredibly hard building important relationships with decision makers across the ideological and elected official spectrum. There is no doubt that politics is one of Alicia's superpowers. She has many years of teacher's union experience leading at the local, region and state level. As a longtime educator with more than 20 years of K-12 teaching experience, Alicia is well positioned to represent Idaho teachers at the national level as IEA's NEA Director.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am honored to write this letter of endorsement for Alicia Purdy in recognition of her outstanding leadership and unwavering dedication to public education. As an active member of the Idaho Education Association, a leader in the Idaho Art Education Association, and colleague, I have witnessed Alicia’s efforts on behalf of teachers, students, and the broader educational community.
Alicia's leadership is evident in her extensive involvement in the Idaho Education Association, where she serves as a board member, regional and local union co-president, and a key supporter of fair and strong education policies. She has been a powerful voice in opposing harmful legislation such as vouchers and union-busting efforts while championing initiatives that benefit educators and students, including the dyslexia bill and fair pay for Educational Support Professionals.
Beyond her policy work, Alicia has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to fostering teacher leadership and professional development. Through her work with the regional SPARKS program and the Center for Teaching and Learning, she has helped shape and support the next generation of educators. Her dedication to collaboration has strengthened the relationship between her local union, school district, and the community, ensuring all stakeholders work together to benefit students.
Her influence extends beyond the union. She skillfully engages with moderate Republicans and pro-public education legislators to build bipartisan support for strong public education policies. She has campaigned tirelessly for pro-education candidates, investing her time in door-knocking, phone banking, and hosting forums to ensure that educators' voices are heard in policymaking spaces.
Alicia Purdy is a true leader in the education community, and I wholeheartedly endorse her continued service in support of Idaho’s teachers and students. Her dedication, expertise, and passion make her an invaluable asset to any initiative to strengthen public education.

Alicia has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our community and our educators, and I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact she’s had on our district. From phone banking and door knocking to advocate for Vallivue, Alicia has worked tirelessly to ensure that accurate and essential information is shared with our community. She facilitates VEA meetings, and, most notably, supports the Back-to-School Fair led by the VEA—an event that is nothing short of wildly successful every year. I am happy to endorse [Alicia Purdy] for the position of Idaho NEA director. The work [she has] been doing with the VEA and the IEA are more important than ever as our kids are under threat from those who want to defund our public schools. [She has] been in the trenches - teaching kids, organizing teachers, and advocating at the legislature - and so I have confidence [she] will do a great job representing Idaho's teachers at the national level.

Her knowledge of both local, state, and national government operations, combined with a firm grasp of legislative procedures, makes her uniquely equipped to serve and represent the proud members of the IEA.
As a dedicated Republican, Alicia has consistently championed policies that promote limited government, individual freedoms, and fiscal responsibility. Her commitment to conservative values, along with her ability to collaborate across the political spectrum, ensures that she can build consensus while staying true to our principles.
Beyond her political and legislative expertise, Alicia has an extensive background in special education. Her teaching experience has not only strengthened her ability to communicate complex issues clearly but has also instilled in her a deep appreciation for the importance of informed civic engagement. Whether in the classroom or in the public arena, Alicia has always been a passionate advocate for education and community development.

Alicia Purdy for NEA Director is an amazing advocate for educators and students alike. If you have ever had the pleasure of working with her you know she is a force to be reckoned with and I believe she has the qualities required of an exceptional leader. Knowledgeable, experienced, and professional. Her impact on Idaho education has been immense and I expect no less on the national level.

When Alicia Purdy steps into a room, she is immediately greeted with an ocean of smiles, and it’s no wonder why. Anyone who has worked with Alicia has seen firsthand how incredible she is. Her tireless work ethic has earned her many leadership positions, and she is dearly respected by those working under her. She is a true leader who works just as hard as (and frequently harder than) the teams she oversees. The completion of a goal is never a stopping point for her, but rather a springboard into the next project. Her conviction in her beliefs is infectious and inspires those around her to rally for the causes they hold dear. She is fiercely dedicated to finding the facts of any matter and her vast wealth of knowledge has made her a valuable resource for anyone who needs information. On the rare occasion she doesn’t know the answer to a question, she always promises to research it and report back. She does this without delay and consistently follows up with excellent findings. Alicia has proven time and time again that she is driven by goal achievement, not by accolades. Above all, Alicia is a master of diplomacy. Always focused on maintaining civility, Alicia walks into every conversation viewing the other participants as people, not as adversaries. No matter how fervently she disagrees with an opinion, she always remains cool-headed and civil. She never allows emotions to overcome reason and logic, and the respect she gives to others (even when she opposes their views) is reciprocated tenfold. Her calm, easy way with people has made her a reliable ally for those she represents and has paved the way for many mutually-beneficial professional relationships. Regardless of one’s station, political alignment, or beliefs, Alicia Purdy treats them all with graciousness and dignity. Perhaps if more people were like her, the world would be a better place. She certainly has my endorsement!

Dear IEA Members,
I am writing this letter in support of Alicia Purdy for NEA Director. I witnessed Alicia’s lobbyist skills when I joined her at the Idaho Statehouse. She is an articulate speaker and well prepared with her talking points. She knew the legislators voting record on public education and she brought humor to difficult conversations.
As Idaho’s NEA Director, these skills are vital when lobbying on Capital Hill on behalf of public education. IEA members can expect Alicia to bring her knowledge, preparation, and humor to the Idaho Congressional team. She speaks with clarity and provides concise information. She will watch the team’s voting records and make necessary contacts via emails and phone calls for continuing efforts. Alicia owns the necessary moxie to meet with success.
I encourage your support of Alicia Purdy for NEA Director.
In Unity,

My name is Julie Scharfen, and I have the privilege of writing a letter of recommendation for Alicia Purdy. I first got to know Alicia over thirteen years ago when we were both special education teachers at Lowell Scott Middle School in West ADA. Alicia has always been a strong advocate for her students, fellow colleagues and parents in the school district. She has been a member of the Meridian Education Association and Vallivue Education Associations. She has been on the IEA board of directors, a Co-president of both the regional board and local union, GR/PACE, a community activist, Lobby day organizer and facilitator, Sparks Retreat Organizer and Facilitator. She has attended Representative Assemblies, Delegate Assemblies and has been an active member in advocating for education.
Alicia is an experienced, knowledgeable educator who has great potential for future teaching and leadership jobs. She has a general education, special education teaching degrees and administration and would be very knowledgeable with helping students, teachers, administrators, families and has worked with legislators. Alicia possesses all the skills that are necessary to be an effective NEA director. Alicia has strong collaborative skills and truly cares about the students, teachers, and parents of Idaho. Mrs. Purdy exemplifies teamwork and has helped mentor and support the new and upcoming teachers in her school districts. She is extremely organized, passionate, determined, and dedicated to excellence. She is an active listener and carefully gets all the facts before making decisions. On multiple occasions, I have personally observed that Alicia understands the importance of having the students’ , educators’ and paraprofessionals' best interest in mind.
Alicia Purdy has the skill, ability, and desire to be an excellent NEA director, teacher and leader. Alicia would be an asset to this position. She has the talent to perform at a high level. It is with great confidence that I give this recommendation and endorsement for NEA director.

IEA members please vote!!! Alicia Purdy is a perfect choice for ALL of us! I met Alicia several years ago when I was on the IEA board of directors. We instantly, like many teachers, struck up a political conversation. And while our backgrounds and ideals may differ on some ideals, we have the same goals for education in Idaho and for our own families. She has worked tirelessly for the students and for public education to improve in the state of Idaho. She has built meaningful and lasting relationships with political leaders on both sides of the aisle and has the ability to do that genuinely and seamlessly. She has spent her career and advocacy working for the Idaho teacher and the Idaho student, for me. There is nothing better. Please join me in voting for my dear friend and colleague Alicia Purdy.
